Does your dog have the right stuff?
If you want to share your wonderful dog with others, test him first to see if he would make a good therapy dog. Leash him and take him somewhere crowded and noisy, like a busy park, and watch his reactions as people pat and admire him. Find out if he responds to your commands while in a hectic environment.
In most therapy dog programs that offer certification, your dog will have to demonstrate that he can:
1. Accept a friendly stranger
2. Sit politely
3. Walk on a loose leash
4. Walk through a crowd that includes wheelchairs
5. Sit on command and stay in place
6. React well to another dog
7. React well to distractions, like loud noises.

Therapy Team: Shari Emory & Rudy
Breed: Yellow Labrador Retriever
Age: 9 yrs
Therapy Certification: Delta Society
How long as a therapy dog: 4 years
About Rudy: We adopted Rudy from the Humane Society Adoption Center of Monroe in 2001. The moment he entered the shelter, the staff knew he was a special dog with his kind and calm mannerisms. Having 2 labs already, the director knew I was a lab person so he called me to come take a look. The bond between us was immediate. I truly believe Rudy is my miracle dog and was sent to me to share with the world.
Places we visit: Azalea Estates Assisted Living, Avalon Place Retirement Home, Landmark Retirement Home, Glenwood Hospital, Ouachita Parish Public Library, Med Camps of NE Louisiana, Special Events
Rudy’s favorite visits: Rudy’s favorite visits are Azalea Estates and the Ouachita Parish Library. He is a very calm and relaxed Labrador retriever so he loves lying on his back for belly rubs with the residents at Azalea Estates. He is also in his element reading with the kids at the Ouachita Valley Branch.
